Extend the Range of Your Zune FM Transmitter by Dyer13
Posted: Feb Wed 07, 2007 3:38 am
This mod will guide you through the steps necessary to open your Zune FM transmitter and connect a longer antenna to inscrease the range.

Estimated Mod Time: 25-35 minutes
Mod Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

**Note I am NOT in any way responsible if you should happen to follow my tutorial and YOU screw up. It is not my fault if you screw up trying to do this, and I will not assume responsibility in any way. Do this mod under your own risk! If you don't know what you are doing, then don't do it.**

Information & Setup
Get all the supplies you will need ready and laid out.
You will need:
A. Zune FM Transmitter
B. Pocket Knife/Leatherman
C. Soldering Iron
D. Solder
E. Antenna Wire
F. Flathead Screwdriver

Step 1
First you want to pry off the top piece of the FM transmitter. To do
this, carefully take your pocket knife, slide it into the groove where the
top piece meets the body of the FM transmitter case, then pull up on the
handle of the knife to pry the top upwards away from the body of the FM
transmitter case. If done correctly, there will be no visible interruption
to the case, and it will still look stock. Try not to break any of the tabs
on the top piece, like I did.

Step 2
After the top cover is off, you want to make sure you don&t touch
or scratch the LCD, because once back together, the LCD will be under a
clear protective layer, and any fingerprints or damage will be clearly
visible and unable to be cleaned. Carefully pull straight up on the circuit
board to pull the top half of the CB&s away from the bottom. Set the
top CB aside for later.

Step 3
Now you want to pull the bottom CB from the body of the FM transmitter
case. It makes it easier if you take out the black plastic piece around the
dock connector. To take this out, take a small screwdriver, and carefully
push in towards the center, and out to pop the tabs out of the holes.

Step 4
To take out the CB, you first need to break off the plastic welds that
are holding it in place. This is easily done using your pocket knife. You
will then need to push down on the dock connector, while simultaneously
pulling the sides of the body outwards. You then want to pull the bottom CB out of the body of the case, shown below.

Step 5
After you pull out the bottom CB, set everything except the CB aside.
Flip the CB over to show the original Zune FM transmitter antenna. It is a
small bent piece of metal shaped like an "S" and is in the middle of the
board.

or the new solder spot (may yield better results)

Step 6
Now it’s time for some soldering. If you don’t know what you are doing at this point, then you should not even try to continue, instead either learn to solder, or you should get someone who knows how.

Step 7
Take your antenna wire and either solder it onto the antenna that is
already there, or you can unsolder the original antenna and solder on a new wire where the antenna was soldered. Either way is fine, but I don’t like to have extra parts left over, so I soldered my new antenna to the original antenna. It really does not matter.

Step 8
Now is the hardest part. Depending on how you want your Fm transmitter to be, it will affect this next step. You can either run your new antenna in circles inside the case, or drill a hole and run it outside of the case. I wanted to be able to hook up as long as an antenna as I wanted, so for that I wanted to drill a hole and route my new antenna out of the case. Now, you can do whatever suits you best, it just takes some trial and error to make sure everything fits and the dock connectors still line up with the holes. To get the antenna to the topside of the bottom CB, run the wire through one of the beveled off corners of the CB. Make sure the top CB easily fits back on and the new antenna is not in the way of anything.

Step 9
Put it all back together! Make sure it works, it should! If you accidentally broke one of the tabs on the top piece, like I did, there are a couple ways to fix it. You can use glue if you want, such as super glue or any CA (Cyanoacrylate) type glue. Or you can do a little bit of plastic welding. I did the latter of the two. Just take an old pen and melt some of the plastic onto the tip of your soldering iron. Then put the new plastic on the broken tab, and weld the two broken pieces together with the new plastic. If the tab broke completely off, it is a little harder, but can still be done.

Your Done!
Give yourself a pat on the back, you are done! Plug in your Zune, and go for a car ride or something. With this modification I can use my Zune anywhere in my 10x10 room with little static. Also, if your radio is weak when it comes to picking up stations, like mine, you can wrap a wire around it, and then attach the new antenna wire to it, and it will make the signal stronger and clearer for your radio to pick it up.

I have an update to add to the FM transmitter tutorial. Someone emailed me with their thoughts, and one person told me that he followed my tut and didn't have any greater range or any results really. I think that it helped, but not enough for him to notice. He did tell me that he was searching around with a multimeter, and found another spot where the signal is transmitted, and it is greater than at the antenna. It seems that it is right before a SMD capacitor or resistor maybe, but anyway, I soldered an antenna there, this time using an antenna out of an old linksys router, and my range is increased to ANYWHERE IN MY HOUSE! I live in a bi-level house, and I was on the complete other side downstairs, probably 35-40 feet, and my radio was upstairs.

I soldered a 6.5 inch , very fine and insulated, wire to the 'top' side of the , what i think is, capacitor. i then coiled it around the underside of the pcb, no need to port it through the chassis. this increased my range 50 to 75 feet. any how, try it out and let me know what you think. glad to see some modders posting zune mods.

Another thing, in the article on the fm transmitter, I don't think that the wire length should be that long. Cynidetransist completed the mod, with the updated spot, and wrapped a very fine 6.5" insulated wire around inside, and it increased the range to 60-75 feet.

Ryan emailed these pics to me of his mod. He said it works from 20 feet away, and I'd bet that if he updated using the new solder pad, it would work from 50 feet.

Hey, I was wondering. I am going to be doing the same mod ,more or less, in a few days and I was wondering where you found or how you made the antenna that you have in the picture there in your update?

Also could explain a little more about coiling the wire under the pcb and how you finished up the mod. etc.? Smile

Thx a bunch.

I had time last weekend to do several tests.
1. With no wire mod, needed to be 2" from the antenna. Yes, 2 inches.
2. With 10" of 22ga wire, coiled inside, had a range of about 4-6', depending on how much static you were willing to live with.
3. With 8" of 22ga wire poked outside the case, had a range of approx. 20' before it got noticably static filled.

These are with the "modded" location (not at the antenna point). Tried a piece of 18ga wire, but that didn't make any difference.

Final config is approx. 8" of 22ga wire poked out through the case that hangs. Even coiling this wire on the back of the transmitter greatly cut down on it's distance. I found that leaving it as straight as possible made it transmit the best.

Hope this helps!

I know its been done before but I just wanted to show you guys its not that hard to do:

Cut off the connector from a dead linksys card and used it's antenna. Had to remove plastic over wire in top side of the circuit board due to limited space inside it. Works great, signal spans 3x farther than before.

note to anyone amature like me tryin to xtend other fm transmitter brands. i bought the belkin tunecastII. i looked for locations i could solder to increase the range, and chose the wrong one(coiled copper wire) dont touch that, it will eff up the whole transmitter. there IS however an antenna wire, the far left wire sodered in line with the headphone jack, the wire runs up the cord with all the other headphone stuff, you might be able to solder there. or on the back of the board, top left, there is a bow you could solder to.

Um...
What would happen if you soldered it to both?

would you have the best yet?

I recently performed this mod with a friend of mind and first we used the the linksys antenna without the wire connected to it, soldering it to the metal tab on the antenna and we had the greatly increased ranges then we went back to put a hole in the transmitter for the wire from the transmitter to the antenna it some how messed it up and somehow could never get the range we had of about 50-75 feet clear. We tried numerous wires. then for some odd reason we used a headphone jack wire off some old headphones without the linksys router antenna and now I have pretty clear reception in my truck but have been unable to get back to the long range with the linksys reception. So I was wondering if anyone could give a more detailed description of what wires to use and where to solder to get the best range with the linksys antenna. Also has anyone tried the new Zune transmitter(car pack), or the new DLO transmitter for Zune(one with blue backlight).

Also hey Cleako how did you get the antenna screw on connector put on the side of your transmitter.

I just picked up one of these gen1 xmitters this weekend. The price was right and like really like the look, but boy are they crap.

On top of everything else I noticed that music sounds really over modulated through mine. It sounds like it is so loud coming out of the zune that the receiver just can't handle the volume. But with no way to adjust the volume on the zune with the xmitter plugged in I have no way to know.

So I am torn between taking the darn thing back or this mod. Could the audio just sound over modulated because the lack of signal? Has anyone else noticed this before or after the mod?

Can someone please post on how they attached the wifi router antenna to the transmitter? I have examined the pictures as much as possible but I can't zoom in any farther to see the solder points and how it's attached to the transmitter from the looks of it the wire is at another point on the board....

Thanks to Dyer13web@gmail.com for starting this post and others for their input. I had trouble seeing where to make the solder points and I took some pictures of what I did. I would post them here however I couldn't figure out how to do so.
