SPECK PRODUCTS Zune ToughSkin Case
MSRP: $34.95
Background
The Zune Toughskin in a rubber case with a plastic screen protector designed to keep your Zune in good condition while giving you access to all its functions. I was able to grab it off amazon for about $25.00.
What You Get
In the box there was the case, a manual, screen protector, and a belt clip that can be detached from the back(which I opted not to use).
Thoughts & Concerns
The Zune fits into it by peeling back the rubber and sliding it in. It forms a secure fit and the plastic screen goes inside the rubber over the top of the Zune. The case provides fantastic protection, and actually makes using the wheel on the Zune easier because of the elevated rubber. The Zune will not fit into the dock, but you can get the usb cable in while the case is on and of course the headphones and hold button are still accessible.
Now right now your thinking "A solid case that allows full access to the Zune and good protection? For only $25!" Well there are a few downsides that I found annoying. First of all this case is huge. The Zune isn't exactly small for a modern mp3 player, but with this case on it nearly doubles its width. The rubber groves make a good grip, but they stick inside your pockets making it harder to take out. With the belt clip on it would be monstrous. Also you cant see any part of your Zune other than the screen while it's in the case, so if you're like me and think the Zune looks sexy as is, you won't like the look of this too much. It also has a habit of picking up a lot of dust. My final quirk is that the screen protector doesn't fit perfectly, it tends to need a little adjusting once in a while.
Conclusion
Is the Speck ToughSkin a solid case? Well literally yes. But at the cost of extra width and bulk. If you need your Zune to survive constant fall damage or plan on using it while rock climbing during a nuclear attack then yes I do recommend it to you. Or maybe you think the Zune looks hideous and want to hide it entirely. But if you're like me you will look elsewhere for a smaller case.
