|
|
Dear All,
I've seen the Zune old radio adapter mods, but after disassembling the new V2 car kit, it seems that the layout and BOM doesn't match what I had expected to see.
There does not seem to be a discrete antenna anymore, which leads me think it's been incorporated in one of the cables.
The problem is that my Audi has the radio antenna in the right rear quarter window, and I can only get halfway decent reception if I put the transmitter in the back!
I've thought about putting some HF wiring to the back of the car, put a decently small 1/4 lambda or smaller antenna up against the window, and connecting the coax up to my Zune adapter.
I've made some hi-res photos of the V2 adapter after disassembly, but need someone with more experience to help me find the right points to start looking for an antenna lead!
Attached are smaller photos of the transmitter, they hyperlink to larger full resolution versions hosted locally.
Disassemby:
- Remove metal pan -- this is held onto the chassis by adhesive tape, you will need to heat the whole thing up to 60-70 deg C so you can loosen the adhesive. Note that the magnet is glued onto the plasic chassis under the pan.
- After carefully prying off the pan, there are four corner screws to remove the plastic cover and get to the electronics.

Dane, the antenna pad is just off the bottom right corner of the 10-pin connector on the reverse side of the board, and is marked DTP22. I have tested this and now I get incredible reception.

Wow... ya know, i think this may be the only thread on the web that people have actually, at least, attempted this mod with v2. I've been looking for the past few hours scouring the net in search of just this info... unfortunately Dane's description of how he managed to remove the metal pan has left me scratching my head a bit . Can anyone explain how to remove the pan in a little more detail??
Thanks guys! - Strider |

Hi Strider,
I put it on a desktop coffee cup warmer for about 5 minutes -- that managed to heat up the pan enough to pry it off.
You need enough heat to soften the adhesive on the tape holding the metal pan to the plastic, but not too much to damage the display or electronics.
Due to some changes on my PC, I've stopped running a local Apache server.
