Any ideas on making a solar powered Zune?
Seriously

PS: The solar cells would supplement the battery.

The casing is transparent so you hollow out the inside a bit and put some solar cells behind it and hook it up to the power input.

My Zune never sees the Sun.
Its always in my room, pocket, or backpack.

Plus if you left it in the window facing the sun, i guess it would damage the inside of the Zune.

Oo true

I guess it would be good for when you can't charge it (stranded on a desert island) or camping and it would be a good way to extend your battery life at least.

I've been looking up some solar cells and surprisingly the ones from Radio Shack are looking good but expensive.

I did the math and it might work.

Using the solar cells from Radio Shack they are 2cm x 4cm and have an output of 0.45V (0.55V Max) and 0.275A (0.3A Max)

So by braking them in 1/2th and 1/8th you can fit 14 halfs on the back. With that a solar panel with an out put of 6.3V and 0.1375 A can be made. But sense it's not a perfect world at 0.36V, 0.08A per cell the panal will still have a voltage of 5.04 and the Zune's average power consumption is 0.0667 Amp (800 mah / 12 hour) so is really should have an positive effect on the battery life even if it's not in direct sun light and + the fact you would have a Solar Powered Zune..

ROFL, you're a freakin' genius.
Welcome to Zunemods. To make a case, I guess it would be good for that, but I hope your Zune is out of warranty, and I also hope that the heat won't fry components on the inside.

exactly why NOT leave you eletrical gaget in the direct sunlight. even more, the plastic will start to aging.
but good idea if you can solve the other parts.
may be you could just make/buy a solar charger
me and my friend thought about making a solar powered cooler. lol

Ninjay makes a good point.
Maybe you can make a USB charger, that way you can keep your Zune in the tent and the charger outside. It's a win-win.

Should have an positive effect on the battery life even if it's not in direct sun light. I got my Zune from Newegg.com about 2 weeks ago for $99.99 but I voided the warranty 2 days after I got it but I beat I could return it to Wal-Mart if I screwed it up. I also got 3 solar cells from RS today and I'm testing them now.

The whole point of this is I want to make it all inigrated so I don't have to carey it with me. The one thing I do need to know is which are the power pins on the Zune's mother board.

Yes I would rather have games too but I wouldn't know where to begin with that. now if Linux ever gets ported to the Zune then I might try something.

Haha that crossed my mind but the Zune has a plastic case and it might mess up the Zune it self (static electricity restart problem) but now on the Zune 2 you could put strips of metal on the back insulated from the back itself of coarse and use one of the shock coils from a shocker pens and you got yourself a "Zune Zapper"

But the Zune 2 is smaller and the Solar power mod would be easer and more practical.
