I have been trying to find a solution to my problem that I have had for a couple weeks now.

I got an iPod Classic 80GB as a gift and decided I would swap its hard drive with the one in my Zune 30.

I got the iPod open (except I broke the screen) and removed the hard drive. The drive is a Toshiba MK8022GAA (which is the same drive used in the Zune 80 apparently). It is exactly the same physical size as the MK3008GAL drive that was in my Zune.

The problem is that the Zune doesn't work; as soon as I connect power to the Zune (either the battery or the USB cable) the Zune gets stuck at the "3 Please wait." screen. I have left it at this screen for over a day but it doesn't change.

The iPod works fine with either drive. I actually am replacing the original back plate with one intended for an iPod Video 30GB so it will be a 30GB iPod Classic in storage and label.

Does anyone know why the Zune doesn't like the 80GB iPod Classic hard drive? Checking the specs at Toshiba's website they are exactly the same except for the buffer size. Same dimensions, same power and voltage. The worst part is that the iPod works with either of the drives.

Try formatting the drive and start again.

I have tried that. I connect the drive back to the iPod and choose to format in Windows. My only option is NTFS (when I go to format the 30GB drive I can choose between FAT, FAT32 and NTFS) so it seems that this is why I am getting an error.

I just bought an enclosure for 1.8" ZIF drives off ebay but it won't be here for a couple weeks at least. Do you think I need to format the drive as FAT or FAT32 for the Zune to be able to read it or should NTFS work?
