i'm not familiar with SAS "Serial Attached SCSI" I know IDE, SCSI, and most of the forms of SATA, heres my plan.

I want to replace my 60gig 5400rpm harddrive with a 73gig 10000rpm drive (yes 73gig). Not much of a difference on space but speed... damn!

the problem is the newer drive is a SAS and i have no knowledge on that or even if it can fit normal SATA. Can anybody help me out on this?

Just for fun, SATA on the PS3 is only 1.5Gb/s not 3Gb/s so yea.... 500 bucks and we cant even get 3Gb.

Holy crap dude! SAS is mainly a commercial application, but if you want to call up your metal music that fast, why not? Twisted Evil Anyway, it's looking like you can, based on the description of SAS in Wikipedia. It looks like they're getting it ready to make it very flexible with other devices, much like the old-school SCSI that I worked with, when I was 10.

if ur upgrading the hdd in ur ps3 its best to stick with a SATA drive that's identical in speed, otherwise you run the risk of it not working

Whoops, I skipped over the PS3 part.

Follow Bald's advise. I would stick to system specs too. Besides, wouldn't you experience only minimal speed increase if the drive itself spins faster?

from what i've read online the PS3 doesn't have a required RPM speed, the drive that comes in the PS3 is a 5400rpm, alot of people replace it with 7200rpm and notice a 2-3 millisecond difference. I've never heard of a system let alone a console having a recommend or requirement for drive RPM only transfer speed.

the PS3 does however only support 1.5gb/s as far as the transfer speed, but even if i were to replace that with a 3gb/s drive it wouldn't matter because 3gb/s SATA is backwards capable.

i figured, since theres not much you can do with a PS3 i would want to speed up the harddrive as much as i can, since a 3gb SATA drive won't do anything, i have to resort to its RPM... because waiting nearly 30 minutes to load more game content everytime you finish a mission on MGS4 is too much! Razz

The only problem i can see is one SAS won't work on normal SATA and two heat.
